Picture a lady sitting on the tram conscientiously listening to a podcast while staring through the window.
Well, that was me a couple of days ago.
On my way back from an appointment, I got sucked into a loop of binge-watching Mel Robbins’ course “Make It Happen”.
As you can expect by the name, Mrs Robbins has this series of talks where she unpacks what you need to hear to get things moving and start working towards your goal (whatever that may be).
At some point, she said: “it is not easy, but it is simple”.
She nailed it.
For the most part, we are very clear on what we need to do to achieve a certain outcome.
Want to lose weight? Exercise more/eat better.
Want to save money? Budget smarter/regularly put some income aside.
Want to learn a new skill? Schedule time to read/practice/follow a training.
Want to become a more organized person? Clean up after yourself/set up a system to place things.
Most solutions to most problems are a no-brainer.
But knowledge doesn’t equal action. That’s the tricky part.
Quite often, we have to look deeper and dig for the real reason that’s stopping us.
It can be fear of change.
It can be a sense of embarrassment.
It can be plain laziness.
And because we choose to ignore the real reason, we fall for the quick fixes. We try the easy route and, when we don’t see results, we just quit. Blame it on whatever external condition may be and call it a day until the next trial.
But here’s the thing:
Real change takes an enormous amount of time and effort.
Real results are the consequence of limitless attempts.
And real success is rarely an overnight event.
None of them come from a snappy try or a comfortable approach to things.
Achieving something happens when:
Yes, we acknowledge what we need to do.
We do the actual thing. As many times as we need until we get there.
It’s a numbers game.
99% of people stay at the first point.
1% make it happen.
