Career-driven or jobless. Married or single. Child-free or with a house full of offspring.
Regardless of personal status, the world is full of unhappy people.
We seek contentment as if it were some sort of drug. We compare ourselves to peers – they always seem to be better off after all. We chase what we’ve promised to be the key to a meaningful life. The graduation title, the wedding, the kids, the juicy paycheck.
And wonder: what’s next?
Nothing seems to be quite it.
Planning an exit from our dread might be the solution. Or is it not? Will the grass be greener on the other side?
There are tons of studies on the concept of “happiness” and what leads to a fulfilled existence. You can skim through any, you’ll find the same:
Meaning, connection, mental and physical health, and a positive (or hopeful, at least) outlook on life.
Why, then, if one “has it all” is still not enough?
The answer lies in shifting from a passive role to an active one.
Happiness is not something that happens to us; but rather something we decide to create.
It’s the choices we make.
The perspectives we adopt.
And the accountability we hold for our actions.
The act of accepting the things that are out of our control and finding joy despite life’s challenges. Acknowledging that we don’t have power over external circumstances, but it’s up to us what we make of them.
Removing the blame on them and placing responsibility on us.
Take a hard look at your current life and ask yourself these questions:
Am I dwelling on negativity and allowing it to overshadow the positive aspects of my life?
Am I holding onto grudges or resentments that are weighing me down?
Am I procrastinating on making necessary changes because of fear or self-doubt?
Am I neglecting my well-being by prioritizing the needs of others or societal expectations?
Am I sabotaging my happiness by clinging to perfectionism or unrealistic standards?
Most importantly:
Am I the one standing in my way to happiness?
